1st and 3rd Saturday from 12:30 - 1 pm
This fun half hour is dedicated to socialization - one of the most important things you can do with your puppy at this age. During this time your puppy will not only be able to socialize with other puppies, but other people as well.
Socializing puppies and kittens is one of the most frequently overlooked yet important things a new owner can do to decrease the chances of unwanted behaviors later as an adult dog. We at Westonka Animal Hospital encourage all dogs and cats to be socialized to as many people as possible.
The socialization period for dogs and cats is between 4 and 16 weeks of age. During that time, the young pet is very impressionable to social influences. They are “imprinting” on humans. If it has good experiences with men, women, children, cats, other dogs, etc., it is likely to accept them throughout life. If the experiences are absent or unpleasant, it may become apprehensive or fearful to any of them. Therefore, during the period of socialization, we encourage you to expose your pet to as many types of social events and influences as possible. Men tend to have a naturally dominating, intimidating lower voice and children may play rough (pull tails, ears, or fur) so we recommend that you focus on exposing your new pet to many men and children. We suggest an exposure minimum of 35 different people.
For puppies, since they are exposed to many dogs later in life, we recommend at least ten different dogs (well socialized dogs) for puppies.
