2024 Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby Cancelled Due to Warm Weather, but Please Check out the Cutest Puppy Contest at Excelsior Brewing Company.

EXCELSIOR, Minn. (January 3, 2024) – The Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby announced today that the lack of ice and snow on Lake Minnetonka caused by Minnesota’s record-breaking warm December has prompted the cancellation of this year’s race, which was planned for Feb. 3. It also announced its annual Cutest Puppy contest—usually held a week before the race—will now take place on Feb. 3.

“Given current conditions and long-term weather forecasts, we determined it is in the best interest of mushers who planned to race this year, our sponsors, and our volunteers to cancel at this time,” said Klondike Dog Derby Founder, Vice President, and Race Director Bethany Hway. “While Minnesota could still give us sub-zero temperatures needed to freeze the lake quickly, plus snow needed to make a trail for the dogs, the odds are not in our favor.”

Safety remains a top priority for the Klondike Dog Derby. While ice and snow could possibly form enough for sled dogs and their mushers to race, Hway said the other consideration is whether the lake would be safe enough for spectators, especially any that would come by vehicle. This is even more highly doubtful.

“For our organization, our sponsors and our volunteers, it’s a bit of an adrenaline ache to have to pull the reins at this point, but we must,” said Klondike Dog Derby Co-founder and President Bill Damberg. “But as we do, we have a head start for working on 2025, when we’ll come back stronger and better than ever.” Next year’s race is scheduled for Feb. 8, 2025.

This would have been the fourth time the Klondike Dog Derby produced a world-class, professional sled dog race that starts in downtown Excelsior, Minn., treks 40 miles on a usually frozen Lake Minnetonka, and ends back in Excelsior. Each year’s race and related activities attract more than 30,000 people. As a result, it is the most important winter event for Excelsior’s retail and hospitality industries.

“While we cannot safely produce the sled dog race, there will still be fun Klondike Dog Derby-related events on Feb. 3 including our annual Cutest Puppy contest, a silent auction and live music at Excelsior Brewing,” Damberg said. More information about these activities will be forthcoming at KlondikeDogDerby.com.

The cutest puppy contest will take place between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., with all entries due by 2:30 p.m. Puppies need to be 6 months of age or younger as of Feb. 3, 2024. Entry fee is $25 and includes a raffle entry for a $250 Klondike Merch basket. More information is available here. Proceeds will support the next Klondike Dog Derby race Feb. 8, 2025.

Between now and then, the Klondike Dog Derby will continue in its educational mission by providing presentations at area elementary schools. Each year the organization demonstrates to thousands of children the incredible athleticism of sled dogs, the unique bond between them and their mushers, the history of the sport and the passion of all the people involved in sled dog racing.

More about the Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby
The Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to produce worldclass sled dog races to serve as a genuine celebration of the sport and spirit of the authentic North; an opportunity for education on the incredible athleticism and passion of sled dogs and mushers; and a tribute to the history of sled dog racing in Excelsior and the Lake Minnetonka area. Net proceeds from each year’s race weekend go to ICA Food Shelf, Can Do Canines and Adopt a Husky Minnesota.
